Yes, both are more or less derived to make a portable form of classic pizza, but the sameness ends there.

Origins

Calzones made their delicious debut in Naples, Italy. Typically made as a single serving, a calzone is made with a circle of salted dough that's piled high with meats, cheese, and veggies before being folded into a semi-circle, crimped, egg-washed and oven-baked. Stromboli, on the other hand, derives from the south side of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A stromboli is also made with pizza dough, but instead of being folded into a half circle, the dough and fillings are rolled into more of a cigar shape. Meant to serve several hungry eaters, a baked stromboli is sliced into single portions instead of being served whole.
